short shift kits, like em or not?

I just ordered a short shift kit from performance plus for my 912e, I would like to hear some comments on these -good or bad-how well do they work ect.----thanks

I installed a Weltmiester short shift in my '67 912 Targa - currently "down" for rust repair.

It's coming out. Why? To me, it just doesn't feel "natural".

So...if anyone wants a only installed, never used short shift kit, zap me mail at bmwloco@mindspring.com. $50 takes it (plus postage)

Coincidentally, last Wednesday I tested a Weltmeister short shift kit that had been installed in my tuner's '76 911s. Seemed sweet, needless to say I will be installing one in my 912E. I like the shorter "throw" feel....

I don't have the Weltmeister one, but I have the cheaper one from Peformance (the one with the small steel block).I love it. It, and the Weltmeister ball cup bushing, made the shifting really great.

The short shift kit was one of the first changes I made to my 69, what a difference. I would suggest it for any restoration project, they don't make and sell all those kits because they don't work......

Personally I'm against short shift kits. I'd actually been thinking about installing one in my 912, but every single one of the mechanics at my local Porsche shop is against short shifters, and they talked me out of it. They definitely know their stuff too.

While it may seem great that you're able to shift more quickly, you also have to realize that the car was designed with a certain shift timing in mind. You shorten the shifter's throw and you throw everything else off. It can just affect the driver, or it can even affect some mechanical things like the transmission.

Also, it isn't really a good idea to install a short shift kit on an older car/transmission. Simply becuase you're starting out with an already older transmission and short shifters burn through syncromeshes much more quickly than a stock shifter. I don't know if you've priced a trannsmission rebuild lately, but if I were you I wouldn't do anything that could shorten the time until you need one.

Thanks for all the replies, seems like the opinions for these kits runs both ways. I plan on replacing the shifter bushing also as I had a 914 and replaced all the bushings and this is one of the cheapest yet most effective ways to improve shifting. I should get my shift kit this week and will let you all know my opinion after I get it installed------Thanks
