Smile Carpet find of the year and ?

A little history to this story I have owned my car for about 6 months bought from the 2nd owner who owned for 33 years. My two major problems with the car when I bought it were that the paint was so so and the interior carpet had been replaced with what looked like a black domestic weave. The center tunnel, back of rear seats, sills were covered and the rubber mats were gone and the same carpet was in their place. The perlon every where else was great and my interior seats(no rips), dash( no cracks), rear deck, and headliner(except for some minor browning at edges) look like new. Well while vacuuming out the interior the vacum pulled up the carpet on the floor mats and to my surprise the previous owner had someone sew this black carpet to all the areas mentioned above. I guess to prevent wear. So I removed the stiching to find some real nice rubber mats and the rest of the carpet in great shape. The question I have is that on the rear of the back seats the only carpet was this black type of carpet that was a little differant than the rest is this the original or were they also covered in perlon?

Talking

Not to take away from this thread or anything but I have a quick question along the same lines I don't think is worthy of a new thread. When installing new carpet are you supposed to leave the rubber mats under the carpet? I have those same mats are we supposed to leave them under the carpet?

69 912 The rubber mats were what covered the floors on our US version cars or there were the european 912's that came with perlon throught. These rubber mats are very expensive to replace I might even say difficult to find in good shape.

Oh I see Alex. Then I guess I should just make sure they are really clean and paint the floor board itself then put the rubber mat back on top then put the carpet over it.

69 912 The rubber matting you are talking about are the thick rubber type mats that are floor coverings. There is also a mat of some sort of fiber (horse hair) that is under this rubber mat used by the company as sound deadining material. Some people purchase the carpet type of mat and put it over the rubber to protect the original or just update the look up to you. If you have removed the interior and the sound deadening material you might consider replacing the material with dynamat this will really quite down the road noise. I hope this helps.

rubber mats....

Actually I am restoring my floorpans......

And thats the reason why I have my "rubber mats" removed.....

I repaired some minor cracks and "ArmorAll(ed)" everything to make it soft and flexible again :-)

The pictures show the four major mats (look for the leather straps) and the center tunnel cover......

In reality they look much better than the pictures......

Good luck und Auf Wiedersehen

SAM1 I noticed that your center tunnel was covered in a rubber mat. What year of car are these mats from? I assume your car is a European model. I dont think that was an option for our American model. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Sam: Does your car also have the wooden floorboards as well? Because mine doesn't but I'm not sure if the car came with them or not? However it looks like I will need some when I install my new carpet and I read that the floorboards also has a clutch pedal limiter.

@ Alex67 My 912 is a 1965 Model, the car was originally delivered to Huntington Beach.....so it is definite a US Model......

More or less all parts on this car are original, the 912 was brought back to europe in 1998.......

The rubber centertunnel cover was standard on the early 912s....

@ 912-69

Shure does the car have this little wooden board for the driver- and passenger side - ´The condition is OK so I will only clean them before they make their way back into the car ;-)

Schönen Tag ;-)

rubber mats

I'd like to get a complete set of rubber mats for my car (a '68). From the pictures it looks like a 'complete' set would be five pieces (2 front floor, tunnel, 2 rear floor)? Is that right? When I see 'rubber mats' advertised does it mean 5 pieces or just the 2 front floor mats?

Anyone know of a source for all of these mats? Tweeks, Pelican, and Auto International don't have them. Stoddart is closed for inventory. What is OFI? Anyone have a set of good used ones?

Thanks.
