On the hunt for an "E" and Questions

Hi 912ers!

I have finally decided it's E time after a bit of 944 ownership. 912Es are my favorite cars. My uncle had #520 for about 6 years.
I have done just about every job on my 944's and I have done plenty of work on bug cars and a 914. I will be doing all of the work myself.

Questions:
I know galvanization started around #550 but does anyone have an actual chassis number on when it started?

I know most, if not all 912Es did not have the pop out rear windows. Is this an easy upgrade to pop out windows?

As this car will be used daily in Phoenix every time but the middle of summer it will need AC. I have read a lot on the 911 system. How does the pulley work on the E? Does it attach to the fan somehow?

Thanks!
Jackson

The floor boards was started in 74. The most of the body wasn't until the 78 SC.

There is no real truth, when the galvanizing started, and how largely it was done.
I have seen good ones, that had a low chassisnumber, also seen badly rotten ones, with a higher chassisnumber. So that doesn't necessarily be a quarantee of a rustfree one.
It is more to do how it is kept, and maintained. After all, these are now 35 Years old.
And no matter how well it is protected, a 35 year old car is old car. and time takes its toll....

Some say pop-up windows are an easy upgrade, and it should be. But it didn't work out in my E. I didn't have the holes in b-pillar for the hinges at all. But I have read, that on others it has worked out easily.

Some Ees had ACs, some were fitted in US. I am sure all parts needed for an AC are available from fellow E owners eventually, if you keep your eyes open.
But since retrofitting an AC is a major task, If you really need one, search for one that has AC fitted.
Even a non working AC can be fixed (with money) more easily, than doing the whole thing on a non AC car.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm definitely looking for one with the AC system but I know I will end up putting 3k+ into it to be usable in 115 degree Arizona anyway.

Speaking of the surface of the sun, what's the story about oil cooler upgrades? Can I just use a Carrera type cooler in the right front fender and a few special hoses?

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

I think there are several ways to do the additional oil cooler,
have seen a front mounted one, with long runs.
But also seen one fitted inside rear wheelarch, with much shorter pipe runs.
As the engine is similar to 914, many items that are used in 914s, like oil cooling, should work in Ees too.
Been to 912bbs.org yet?
