Hello everyone, as my 912 is slooowly turning into a decent SoCal912 (already far superior than NorCal912 specs) I have run across a few minor glitches, such as no brake lights. I'm going to check the voltage at the brake lights and look for any suspisious wires coming from the master cylinder tomorrow, but since I really would like, and need, brake lights by Monday, I decided to post today. Where is the brake light switch on a 65 912? On the 68 it was on the brake pedal. On the 65 it isn't. Was the switch removed by the PO or is it somewhere else, and where?
BTW, yes I checked the fusses. Made that mistake a "few" times before. |

It should be on the very bottom of the master cylinder. I replaced mine with a VW spec switch that looked the same as the orig. About $5 at Advance Auto and "on the shelf". Don't get brake fluid in your eye!

Some comments from the electrical side of things. This is based on my '67 which I'd imagine to be similar.
There are two wires feeding to the brake light switch, which is mounted on one side of the master cylinder via a bolt that couples it to the brake lines. The switch is pressure actuated, so when you apply the brake, fluid pressure causes the mechanicals in the switch to close the contact, short the two wires, and light the brake lights. My brake lights only work with the ignition on, either a quirk of an old car design or a miswire. Anyway, to test the wiring before opening up your brake lines, just unplug the two wires from the switch (the only wires in the brake system) and short them together. Crawl out, turn on your ignition and walk around back. If the brake lights are on, your switch is bad. If they aren't on, look at your wiring before opening up that brake system and giving yourself the pleasure of the brake bleed project we all love. Morrie 67 912 Bahama Yellow Austin, TX |

I didn't have to bleed the brakes after replacing the switch, just replaced fluid into the master cylinder...but the test is good advice..it could save a messy job
