Karmann vs. standard '67 912 coupe?

Greetings All,

I've heard of "Karmann" 912's but don't know what that means?? Can someone please tell me the difference? Also, How can you tell (VIN etc..) if it's a Karmann? I just bought a '67 912 & someone asked if it was a Karmann? I have no clue. Please help..

Regards, Bill

Karmann was a contract manufacturer to Porsche, and made the majority of the 912's. From 1965 through 1967 the Karmann 912 had a 4xxxxx VIN from 450001 through 463204. The paint badge on Karmann built cars will also show the name. They also built 356, 911 & 914 for Porsche.

No difference really. Some say that Karmann tried harder in order to please Porsche and keep the contract. They did have an extra body # hidden away. They made no RHD cars, no Targa's, no 911S and perhaps fewer sunroof cars.
