big bore kit detection?
Is there an easy way to know if an engine has been modified with a big bore kit? I don't know the history of my motor, nor does the previous owner. Ignorant but curious.

I don't think there is anyway that you can check the displacement without pulling the heads off. However, you can check your cylinders to see if they are aluminum or cast iron. If they are aluminum, they are definately the stock size. If they are cast iron, there's a chance its a big bore.

There are a couple of ways to check displacement without disassembly. There is a pro tool that you install into the spark plug hole. It uses air resonance to read the cylinder volume. It is more than accurate enough to answer your big bore question. Commonly used to catch persons that might be “accidentally” running a somewhat too big motor in competition. There is the oil in and oil out method as well. Can be messy but no $$$ tools needed. Efran68912 is spot on, very often the cast iron cylinders are 1720.
