The door panels/pockets unique to 68 were on both 911 & 912.

the inside contains a formed cardboard type material. it is common for these things to break/collapse over time which is why yours was probably removed. i doubt there are many perfectly intact '68 doorpanels out there. the pockets were heat sealed and not easily restorable. note that you can not buy new reproductions for this year but the other years are available. that may be your best bet. now, have you tried locating a like new condition break away style rear view mirror or dashboard? found a mirror new in the box for $125. needless to say i passed and bought a mirror from scott mclean at a great deal. it just needed some minor "touch up". welcome to the pleasures of owning a '68.

tim,
glad to hear the other parts are in good condition. fyi, i like EASY (salvage yard) as my source for used parts - great service and fair prices. plus they host the R Gruppe meetings. they advertise in excellence, 510 653 easy. ask for jim or spencer. bob ps tried to ck out your car in the pp owner's gallery but no luck. |

you guys are right about 68! man is it tough finding stuff, that is why I pertend the giant crack in my dash is a decoration. Bob, long time not talk, i may take your panels if your droopy pockets are better than mine. Also, I may have a way to tighten them back up...project in the works.

I also owned a 912 with Black original interior. The pocket was no wider than the arm rest, I have since sold the car, but as I remember there was a stretchy piece of cloth that kept the pocket snug against the arm rest. I remember having to snug this up as the rubber stretched.
Also I remember reading an article about a 1969 912 German Police car in a well known mag whose name I won't mention. The comment the author had about these pockets was that it was a location for the officer to store his handgun. I found this funny as my car which was your basic 912 also had the same pocket as described in the article. As everyone else has mentioned above and I would agree with, these pockets were unique to all '68 cars. -Don
