Nuts!!

OK, I give up! I need to disassemble my alternator and impeller fan and I'm a bit stuck. I removed the impeller nut and special washer and find a "hub" as it's called, with two flat sides, very soft metal, and apparently forzen in place with rust. Anyone ever take one of these bad boys off before? I'm to the point of chiseling the rotten little bugger off if I have to and just buy a new one. Any suggestions?

Also, any ideas for removing the inside half of front pulley would be appreciated as well. Got the nut and shims off OK, but can't budge the pulley. Needless to say, I'm left hanging by my manuals which don't seem to cover the alternator disassembly at all!! It's always something!!

thanks,
Bill

Garage
Hi,
Try soaking it overnight with some penetrant. WD-40 or liquid wrench will do. Then smack it with a blunt faced chisel. A copper or brass chisel is best. Keep on tapping from side to side until it yields.
Try two large screwdrivers for the back half of the pulley. One on each side and then pry. You will probably have to buy a new one, but it is a good idea to change them out once in a while anyway.
Good Luck, JMB

OK, now for a dumb question.....Is the hub threaded or just pushed into place? Can I pry it off or does it unscrew? I hate to be dense, but it's hard to tell just by looking at line sketches of it in my books. Thanks!

Bill

The hub is NOT threaded on.

You might just need brute strength here and soak it in some kind of solvent/lubricant. If the previous owner used locktite, add some heat from a lighter or another flame source.

I had similar troubles with this about a month ago. You can probably scroll down and read my drama.

Good luck,

Mark

Hi,

I did a search earlier and found your posts regarding the pulley and fan nuts, so that helped as well. I just needed to know if the darn hub was threaded or not so I could deal with it appropriately. I am fighting with 10 years of rust and idleness, so the engine has some less than "fluid" parts!

Thanks,
Bill
