Engine Rebuild

I am a newbie who just got a '66 912 that swallowed a valve on PCH last weekend. So sad. I haven't gotten it apart yet, but it looks like at the very least I'm in for a top-end rebuild. If I'm going through the trouble though, I thought I might just do the whole thing - you know - start with a clean slate.

I'm wondering if any of you out there can recommend a guy to do the rebuild. I live in LA. I want to do things right, but I am poor since I just got the car. Performance is not my priority, reliability is.

I'm open to pretty much anything - big bore (for cheeper parts,) replacement engine (if any of you have one laying around,) whatever.

Simple: The Maestro. Check www.hcpresearch.com

You can get Harry Pellow to rebuild your engine (very well I might add) or get the books and videos you need to do the job yourself.

Best of luck!

E-mail John at this address. He is in Downey. He's the SoCal 912 engine guru.

Just a note......

the Maestro has been under the weather for bit and may not be able to take on rebuilds right now. He is pretty backlogged and trying to nurse himself back to health.

Talk to John in SoCal as he would be closer to you anyway.

If your engine has several thousand miles on it (like mine had) you should do a full rebuild. I have a great reliable, honest ,mechanic who is rebuilding my 69 engine right now. Its getting back to me Tuesday. He is in Long Beach off the 91 fwy and Cherry. The place is called Modern Specialists. Leo is the owner and his son Rolf....562-423-8431......great German mechanic who I can not say enough about. I too wanted a relaible, durable motor. Big bore will save a few $$$$$ but for the money I went with new Mahle aluminum pistons. Had all the engine sheet metal powdercoated at a place near his store (about $250.00 for that but well worth it). I had 2 cracked heads and put in a new cam as well so I'm around $4500 due to the head surprise .................If you want someone who is great and John Benton is busy, Leo is the best. I moved to south Orange Co. but will still drive to have Leo service our 2 cars!
