Just bought a 912, think it is an early one-VIN

Just picked this up today, VIN 452877

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Have you tried 912bbs.org or the registry boards? Sounds like a 66 or 67....

912VIN.com - has it listed as a 1966 Karmann coupe with paint code of 6404 (light ivory) in New Jersey.

Looks like it just came from paint, hope you have all the lights and trim. What do you know about it?

I just listed it on that site...it was painted 10 years ago, owner died before he finished reassembling and I bought it today from the son. All parts are there, original hella lights, all lenses, etc. just has wrong bumpers and was flared out with 930 rears etc...

6404 is unlikely to be the original code, it should be a 66xx code with that VIN; what does the badge say? The car should be a 1966 model year built in 1965, and the kneepad should wrap up the ends of the dash. Do you have engine and transmission #'s?

I have 453903, Dec. '65 production, and it has 4-screw horn grills. Yours appears to have 2-screw fenders so likely they have been replaced.

Not previously listed on 912 Registry

Congratulations on your acquisition! Is the original Driver's Manual still in the car, that should show the original dealer and date delivered.

My 912 built in March 1966 at the Porsche factory has the last three digits of the VIN stamped in the fender headlight buckets. Any sign of numbers stamped on yours?

A few of the owners of 1966 912s that list their cars with the 912 Registry have reported that a 1964-1965 64XX paint code was used for their cars.
For example see a few 64XX 912s listed in the 452100+, 452200+, and 452600+ sections of 912 Registry Owners List 1966 Volume, VIN 1001-3000

Sometimes a paint code from an earlier year is a result of a special order, say for example someone wanted Signal Red on a 1966; but in your case it's more of a puzzle since 6404 and 6604 were both Light Ivory, see:
912 Registry :: Factory Paint Code Table

No previous owner info via the 912 Registry, since the VIN has not been previously registered; if you'd like to register yours here's the link:
912 Registry :: Registering Your Porsche 912 / 912E !

You can also request of Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, they look like this: That is one loaded 912
To order one go to: Certificate of Authenticity - Owner Services - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

You are correct Rick, my database shows 64xx codes pretty consistently up to about 451670, and then mostly 66xx codes thereafter. As you say, both 6404 and 6604 are light ivory, so there was no need to use the older code in this instance. That is why I suspect the correct code would be 6604 if the car was originally light ivory. There is no substitute for checking the code on the badge.

Checked the door plate, paint code 6603 or 6403...definitely an ivory type color. Guess I need the COA. Any idea if there is another spot where paint code is stamped?

These are the codes that could have been used. Most likely is a blue if it ends in 3; but be sure it is a 3 and not a 5 or 8 that is poorly stamped. A closeup photo of the badge would help a lot.

Got the COA from Porsche today....

It is originally 6603-Gulf Blue

10/20/1965 completion date.

The engine matches.
