flywheel seal

hello all,

i have the engine out to try and find a persistent oil leak (thought it was the oil cooler-fortunately not); install new clutch/press. plate; repaint the sheet metal; and to install new exhaust seals at the j-tube connection...during my last stop at a local shop my mechanic suggested i put a new flywheel seal in. it will be here tomorrow and i ordered it without the $60 installation tool. how difficult is the installation without the tool? what is the basic procedure for installation? anything else aside from changing the plugs that i should complete with the engine out?

i also ordered a new set of valve cover gaskets from stoddard (permanent set-$16) can't wait to end my various cork, tube, etc. seal attempts...

thanks as always for the help!

dale

Hey Dale

Maybe I can help with the tool. Email me your full name and address. I will box the tool up and send it to you, just send it back when done. I have seen the seal put in the a hammer before too.

Make sure the flywheel surface where the flywheel seal rests is not groved. Easy fix with a (Speedyseal?). Also, the dowel holes in the flywheel must be round and not oval. New metal seal too

Good Luck

Brett

Porsche Crest flywheel seal

Hello,
All the above is true, I would only add that when installing the so called glad nut make damn sure you torque to factory specs, there have been some real sad stories told at this site and others concerning this major detail.
Good luck,
Chas.

I had a simular persistant oil leak and after 2 seal replacements, and a complete engine teardown and reseal, the problem was the thin metal gasket between flywheel and the crankshaft on the dowels.
It would not leak with the engine setting and idleing but take it around the block and there would be a puddle on the ground.

Brett-received the tool yesterday, thanks for the help, very, very generous of you and should make the process easier...Chas-i'm waiting on a torque wrench rental from a local parts store for the 320-360 ft/lbs range as well as the 36mm socket...I'll update everyone with the results and progress once I get the gland nut off (from what I've read in maestro's "secrets" it's going to be interesting) thanks again for the help

Dale

Im betting the 36mm from the rental shop will not fit, hope Im wrong. Needs to be a thin wall 36mm. Also, the gold tool is a flywheel stop, so to take the flywheel off/on

Shoulda sent the 36mm too(had it in my hand)
