Nice work.

Indeed, take many pictures and then some more....
If you need them, you really need them :)

taking the exhaust off was a little tricky but remove the small screw on the heat exchanger, and the little tin piece. this will let the pipe move just enough to slip off the manifold bolt. Also i'm showing myself the tin pieces to remember where they went. Sorry about the disorganization of my photos. they are not in any particular order anymore. BTW these are euro heat exchangers.

Amazing that this is the first time for an engine rebuild! Tell us more and send photos! What's next?

Otto H. Wegkamp 02-23-2013 06:18 AM

Spencer,

The disorder just makes it more interesting for us ...

Remember the Porsche parts catalog (PET) has nice pics with all the parts. Not real "exploded view" but they are a great help to prevent forgetting the tiny parts like O-rings, rubber rings, and so on. Not only for the engine work!

Any news regarding the heat exchangers? Repair or new ones? I could take a look for you here in Europe if needed.

We keep watching and reading ...

Hi Speedo65

Walt also help me with my rebuild here is the link to the build. It might give you some ideas.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-912-technical-forum/553487-jerrys-912-engine-rebuild.html

What mod are you doing I used 96mm JE pistons, 331s cam, lighten flywheel and oil bypass. Walt called it the rally engine. Great engine and fun to drive.

Good luck

Jerry1 02-23-2013 10:06 PM

Sorry 86mm pistons

Spendo65 02-24-2013 12:44 PM

Jerry,

I'm Doing the Same 86mm JE pistons. Walt called it rally 1. Im trying to keep the rest of the engine looking as original as possible. But want it a little faster. Turns out the engine has been done 2 other times unfortunatly not very well. I decided to upgrade some. Thnks for the link and I've been studying your restoration and it has helped and will help me more when i go to put it back together.

Clean Transmission!! After Hot Tank Bath, Some corosion on the front but will not be seen unless you crawl under the car. I lied check the next page for Stone tumbling, looks brand new. Next all new Bearings and syncros. I don't want to go back in there in my lifetime.

Spencer,

And also to all of the other members reading this post. What makes or breaks an engine rebuild? I know our engine in the 912 was rebuilt in 1982-3 and only has 5000 miles since according to the odom and we all know how accurate those numbers can be. I am sure I will also be into the engine as well, however with my knowledge base, I am not even sure I could spot a bad rebuild even if it walked up to me and B-slapped me in the face.

Just wondering??

Cheers, Trevor

Not sure i'm the one to answer that question. A good one though. I am replacing every thing that i can afford. Pistons, Cylinders, My Crank was bad and had been ground twice before. All new bearings. Cam shaft, seal gaskets, rubber. I think it depends on how deep you problem is in the engine. if nothing is bad deep then resurfacing cylinders new rings should be ok. always good to check the heads valves and seats. This is the first engine rebuild for me so I'm learning all kinds of things as I go. This forum is great. My machine shop Guy Walt at Competition Engineering has been very helpfull. Hope this helps and others will leave more information for both of us.

Same story as my car body. I am waiting for engine to get back from machine work. can't wait to get it back, hoping for June. Then I will take pictures of everything before and each move I make. Stay tuned.

I like the German-spec heater system you have; they should have all been delivered with that system

Spendo65 05-29-2013 12:55 PM

Me too. Thanks can't wait to put it back together.

This is the new pinion bearing to my transmission. This was very hard to find. Porsche is out everyone was out of them. Got lucky and found this one on The Samba. A two year old add. He had this one left. wheeeww. otherwise I was hearing backordered indefinitely. Took three months to find. I hope the rest of you that are redoing your transmissions don't have the same problem.

Spendo65 07-23-2013 08:31 PM

Trying to keep updated here so I don't disappear. I decided to tumble the transmission case so I will post picture when it is done.. Still waiting on engine and body to return to me.

Ok, I have a question about the original exhaust muffler. Do they cake up on the inside. and absolutely need to be replaced? Can it be cleaned? Because it is the original I don't know if you replace or restore it.

Thanks
Spendo

Otto H. Wegkamp 07-29-2013 01:54 AM

Hi Spendo,

Unless you saw young birds leaving the pipe this spring, I don't think it needs an internal clean up. Is it really the factory exhaust you have? Wow!

Otto

Spendo65 07-29-2013 05:04 PM

Yes, it is the original muffler, and no birds :). I didn't know if they go bad or cake up making the exhaust flow worse. It is rusted on the outside but not so much that it has holes. New are $450 or so. I want to do the best on this restoration that I can. Should I take it to a muffler shop to have it checked out?

Thanks Otto.
