I would save the money for bringing it to a "muffler shop". The best test still is installing it and running it on the engine. If there is some carbon or dirt (birds nest...) in it, it will be burned and blown out. I never heard of a clogged exhaust in these cars. It happens sometimes to cat convertors in modern cars.
It's more likely that the internals of the muffler are rusted (through). When the engine and exhaust are not reaching their operating temperature, water is gathered in the exhaust system (condensation) and will increase developing rust. So the outside might look clean and strong, but the rust can have eaten from inside, making the steel as thin and weak as paper. So, just install it and if it fails or is not what you expect from it, a new one is installed within half an hour. Otto |
thanks Otto for all your help. It seemed like it was working well when I took it off in October of last year when I started this project. I will have it cleaned and repainted the original grey. If it fails i'll get a new one.
thanks again. Spendo |

This pretty much says it all. Ready to be put back together. Larry Thomas at Monarch Precision Deburring Co. made this look new again. Thanks Larry. I have more pics of the individual pieces. if you want more. If you look at the other pictures of the transmission you can see the corrosion of 40 years at the beach not to mention all the oil and dirt buildup. Just happy to see progress. its been 4 months of waiting for parts and machine work. Still waiting on engine. and Body for my other thread. Stay Tuned. |
Wow! More pics? I'm not sure if my eyes can stand more of this shiny metal. Impressive!

Also just heard from engine. I should be getting it back in a couple of weeks. Pictures to follow. stay tuned. spendo |
I'm speechless ...

Otto,
the inside looked like that before I had it tumbled. it was the outside that was not so good. 44 years of corrosion by the sea, |
Spencer, I know, but my problem is that it's hard to tell what's inside and what outside ... Totally confused by all that shiny metal!
I think I'm just a bit jealous, Ottp |

Mounted #3 and 4 half case to engine stand. The case didn't come out as clean because it was not tumbled better left untouched I think shows the 45 years of wear.

Building the Crank. I forgot to take pic before I started. Just too excited to get working on it. I cleaned the surface of the rods where the new bearings go with carb cleaner. No oil at all on the rod surface or you can suffer the fait of spun bearings. Clean, clean, clean. Then fit the notch of the bearing in the rod place thumb on it and push other side down. Both rod and rod cap. Then I greased the bearing inside on both, greased the Crank the placed the rod and snugged each bolt. That is what you see here. I did make sure the all the numbers faced the same way although I don't think it matters because they are all balanced. but taking no chances.

Congratulation Walt does a great job with the machine work.

Yes he does and he has been a great help with any questions that I have. Makes this project a little easier.

Cam followers in place. bearings are perfect on a trial case closed. Rods and crank moving smoothly. The case nuts I wire wheeled and they came out nice. that is the before and after. going to spray clear on them. keep them shiny. Hoping to seal the case tomorrow. |

Fresh lifters make sure you lube before you drop them in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1380235964.jpg Main bearings in place. Clean the bore then snap them in, then lube the inside of bearing where crank journals will fit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1380236083.jpg Rod and Cam in place. Moving right a long. |

I wire wheeled the whole thing and this is how it's coming out. Trying not to buy a new one just yet. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1380236356.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1380236380.jpg |
Thought I would share this one too. My buddy built this for me so I didn't have to work on the bench. He took the old Gland nut and welded it to a bar. then I could slide it into my engine stand and build the Crank. Very cool.
