Free 912 to good home.

Well, that's kinda what it's shaping up to be. Here's the skinny: I happened onto a '68 coupe, original owner, engine out, stored for years (exact number unavailable, but a good while). The car is original white interior and purple exterior. I didn't even bother to check for repaint on that. One scary combo, for sure.

The owner has refused decent offers, prefering to select the next owner by his intent/ attachment to the car. This guy cannot afford to proceed with the car, but can't stand the thought of someone else owning it. He has faced reality as he has mentioned the car to me knowing that I could put it together and drive it.

The catch: HE WANTS VISITATION RIGHTS!! That's right, he thinks nothing of telling me that I can have the car, pink slip and all, but that if he wants to take a drive in it now and then for old times sake, I will hand him the key.

What would you do? Remember, this sucker is purple over white. I'd have to cover it up to sneak up on it to do the work. And before I'd open the garage door, I have to prime it.

Zeke,

If you don't take it I will, I live in NoCal and would be more than happy to allow "visitation and drive" rights.

Porsche Crest purple?

Zeke,
Get the car, re-paint it a Porsche color and tell him the purple one ran away with a 356.....
Happy motoring,
Chas.

Cool

Every 912 deserves a good home. You can list it in the 912 Registry, w/ his name as PO and a photo. We hear from people looking for 912s they sold, and current owners looking for previous owners.

When I was negotiating with the previous owner of my 912, he wanted to do a 1/2 ownership thing with me and share the car. I was hesitant to do so as people get weird over things they think they own or have to share. I could see myself having to ask him if it was OK to fix this or change that or would he pay for half of necessary repairs. No a great scenario.

Fortunately, he had told his wife someone was interested in buying it and she said sell it or else! I guess you can say I was lucky they needed a new furnace for their house. Anyway, in all seriousness, I can't imagine how a deal like this would ever work out to everone's satisfaction. I'm just not that trusting of people's intent or ability to actually share something like a unique auto!

Good luck, this is definitely one for the books.

Regards,
Bill

Zeke,

I would proceed with the deal. The previous owner of my 912E was evaluating 3 separate offers when I contacted him. All the offers were the same amount. After a test drive, he proceeded to interview me. What company do you work for? Who do you bank with? What school did you attend? If I sell her to you would you swear to only use Mobil One?

I guess we all have some quirks...my guess is that after a visit or two, the currect owner will move on...especially if you become unavailable (busy during the dates and times he wants to connect...).

Welcome to the 912 side of life, lots of good people here. The vast majority of the postings here are "egoless". Check out the Socal 912 board, most of the 912 So Cal locals post in both areas, again its a great group of people...

Good Luck,

Bob

Bob, thanks for the encouragement and prediction that the PO would finally get over his post-partum syndrome.

BTW, would that be BASS as in Bass Ale?

I hope it works out for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of folks who thought they could work things out themselves.

Bill

I don't think this is going to present a legal problem. If I get the pink, then it's mine. The moral and emotional issues are what's at stake here.

I have some more info: He bought the car in Germany, drove it over there for a while, then shipped it here. It has significant, but not terminal, rust.

Zeke914,

During my youth I spent many days and nights on full-day boats fishing the channel Islands. I always enjoyed hooking a Calico Bass using freshwater tackle, however you are correct...

Occassionally, I do enjoy a Cold Bass Ale with meals...and for dessert a Black and Tan poured correctly...

I thought that COLDBASS would be apropos as my personal e-mail is @beer.com

Regards,
Bob
