Unhappy First proper run up 4 10 years HELP!!!

Please help me. I have books on the car and they are a help of sorts
I have a 69 912 I have managed to get the car running about 2 years ago. I only ran it for a couple of minutes. Mainly just to check it was ok. I have since striped the car repainted done all the brakes etc and have almost got there. But I am running out of steam. See my 912UK page as it has some photo's.

I have put in a 050 dizy and I am not really sure if I have set it all up correct. I know the firing order and have worked out the dizy turns clock wise. I set up no.1 ( by checking it with a plasic stick to make sure it was at TDC(Plug Out). )Then it was 4 then 3 then 2. The carbs have been rebuilt how many turns should I turn the air mix screws at the bottom by . I have left them as they where screw in and turned back 1 1/2 turns back does this sound right. I mainly have body work exp. Not engines I am a fast learner as I am very keen to get involved.

I guess all I need is some one to offer some guidence to running it up and then alow me to discribe what happens for more advise .

here is the sad bit I have owned the car for 2 1/2 years spent loads of time and money and never driven it can some one help to get me on the road to 912 heaven

All the best

Mark

Great looking 69. I think everyone here is ready to help you out. Some general suggestions include:
Double check your valve adjustment/oil level (sump & transaxle); fuel filters; & static ign. timing. When cars have been sitting for a long time, I've always liked the idea of disconnecting the coil wire and getting 10 seconds or so on the starter to give the lube system a head start & get some gas to the carbs. Then I'd try starting it, let it idle (if possible) and check for oil pressure and any leaks. If it seems to idle reasonably well, I'd let it warm up slowly without revving. Once you've warmed it up, rev it a little to clear it out & try adjusting the idle mixture screws and check your ignition timing advance, carb sync & idle speed. If all seems good with no unusual noises or backfiring, drive it very lightly for a while to get all the gears/transaxle lubed. I'd definitely take it easy for the first few miles, always checking & listening for anything unusual.
Keep us updated & if possible, I'd like to see a couple more pics of the car & what appear to be perfect Ca black plates.
Bill.

Cheers For replying Bill . I have read what you wrote and I am now going to check all the valve clearences. I was told by the owner of Rogerbrayrestorations.com (i think it is .com it may be co.uk. ) that it is best to have a little extra clearance on the valves ,it should sound like a sewing machine.

oil is new I have had trouble finding out what oil to use. As we have different grades over here in the UK. I have been guided towards diesel oil as it is heavier.

It has in the past back fired. this was about 2 years ago. I remember after a steady idle it reved ( Idid not rev past 2000) but reved wounderfully no hiches. But on return to idle it took a while. I am not sure what this could be. On one hand I think it could be the timing, pos. an air leak or carbs not set up correct either way it can idle at a nice 900 fine. But all this was two years ago.
I know of a guy who had a 914 that again had not run for years he got it running and it backfired at times but the more he drove it. It cleared this pionts I think to the valves. may be had some crud on the surface and the heat may have burnt it off.

I will go and get some fresh petrol (gas) now and do the clearences. good idea about the coil will do that to. Many many thanks for your help I will keep you informed this has now fired me up to get back in the garage and keep going at it. ( I was flagging a bit ).

the car was from Fresno I bought it from a man who was very patient with me as I was having a bad time at the time and when I saw this car for sale he alowed me to get things organised with plently of time. Esp as I was buying from the UK and he was in the US. He had it for along time and had used it as a daily runner then left it in his garage for 10 years then I bought it. It has gone to a good home I am not out to make money on the car I love the shape of the 911/2 and this was a chance to buy one and keep it.

I have since emailed the guy to show him what has been done but to no reply shame. What he did was genuine and I highly respect him for what he did.

Cheers

Mark

Mark,
Setting up the .050 is relativly easy, you need a timing light to set the timing correctly. I run mine with a 5 degree Before top deep center adjustment (BTDC), some run a 4 but mine runs better at 5. Looking at the crankshaft pully you will see a timing mark stamped onto the front of the pully, I think is reads OT or something like that, 5 degrees is approx. 1/4 inch to the right of the mark. This indicator should aline with the timing mark on the timing gear cover on your engine, it's a groove cut into the alloy. They aline at 1000 rpms. To adjust the dist. loosen the adjuster nut and bolt a rotate the dist. slowly to obtain the proper adjustment. This a very important detail to tuning the engine correctly. For more information do a search at this 912 site under .050, there's plenty of information.
The carbs are another matter, what kind do you have Solex or Weber?
I like Webers but that's what I run.
Good luck,
Chas.

Mark.

Where are you based in England. There are many UK based owners on this list that may be able to pop round and help. If you live near me (Bournemouth) I will come round and give you a hand.

Wink

Hi well I live in Southampton (Park Gate). Wow that you be great but If we could talk on the phone first so I can do all the basic stuff 1st to get it all ready

I am reading about the 050 on this board I am in the same boat it looks to be 180' out.

I got waylaid over the weekend but I am today looking at the valve clearences to check them and preping for the gas in to the carbs. Charging the battery ready.

The fuel tank is out as I have POR15'd it . God that stuff is good.
but it did help with a jet wash that was capable of 6000 psi. (DO NOT JET THE TANK KIDS AT 6000psi. ) just enough to remove the rust from the inside it looked like new before I put in the POR15 stuff in. So will run the gas from a can as it has less to travel.

my number is 077 33 444 571 I will call you back cheers

Mark

Mark,
Beautiful car. Hope mine can look like that someday. Mine is a 69 California car that has never had a repaint but was not well taken care of. Most of the paint in wore off. Is the Burgundy Red
(6808). Hope all goes well with getting the car running and on the road because - altough my car ain't no beauty it sure is fun to drive. Good luck
Howard

Love the black CA plates. You need to send those back home to me. The paint IS beautiful, nice job! I'll bet you get some looks with a LHD over there, just like we stare at RHD's here. Best of everyhthing to you.
