How to remove rear wheel bearing on 1966 912
I have everything off and all I need to do now is get the inner and outer wheel bearing removed on this 1966 912 - what is the correct process?
As there is an inner and an outer bearing with what looks like a metal sleeve between them, I am unsure how to get this all out... ![]() Hope to get some great advice from the 912 experts ![]()

Paul,
The best way to remove the ball bearing is using a puller or a press. With a thrust piece of appr. 65 mm you can push it from the back or pull it from the front. You could try to improvise with O-rings, a large nut and bolt or threaded rodand some bushes. Adding heat might help. Here is an example of that method, an interesting thread: Rear Wheel Bearing Removal Take care not to damage the new bearing. Press or pull it in. If it's just for one bearing, a wokshop in your neighbourhood could be willing to help you out. Good luck, Otto |

Thank you Otto. Is it not so that the later cars have only one bearing and the early cars like this 912 has two? I think the approach that you linked to is for cars with only one bearing, and I am not sure if it will work on the 1966 912 I have here?

Correct. I just intended to give you the basic idea of removing the bearing. For the SWB cars, first remove the inner bearing and then the outer one.
The inner ring of the of the inner rollerbearing comes out quite easily. Then the tubes between the inner and outer bearing can be removed, making room to pull/press the outer bearing. Again, you will need a puller/press to get them out. Don't hammer in any way to get them out or in. Any damage will cost you a lot of additional work and money. Otto |
