Newbie to these forums, purchased my first 912 yesterday
Hey folks,
I live in Asheville, NC and just purchased my first 912 (and first Porsche, for that matter) yesterday from a very nice gentleman in Alabama. It's a three owner 1967 with only 51,000 miles. The paint job has only minor imperfections and I could find no obvious rust. Most parts are original, but for those that weren't (rims, steering wheel) the original also came with (even has the original papers, manual, etc). I'm in such awe of this amazing car that I just keep looking at it in amazement. The previous owner only drove it 2-3 times per year, and after about 75 miles of driving it last night the brakes lost pressure (luckily about 1/4 flat mile from my house). I'm thinking this is either low brake fluid or air in the line, since the master cylinder seems less likely to me. Regardless, I'd been planning to meet the folks at the local shop that specializes in Porsches and other German cars and give the car a general checkup anyway, so now am just not going to drive it until after they've looked at it and figured out the brake issue. (Which is dreadful, since it is 30 feet away from where I sit, mocking me, and the brake had pressure last time I went out there and pushed on it, but anyway.) All that said, hello, great to meet you all! Here's a link to my profile, with one of the photos of the car from the listing (for some reason it wouldn't let me upload it to this lost) if anyone wants me to I can do it from my work computer tomorrow and add other pictures of the rest of the car. One of your calipers is most likely dragging, which causes the brake fluid to boil, which allows it to be compressed, which results in a loss of brake pedal. Once the fluid cools and returns to liquid state, the brake pedal will come back and you'll be able to stop. Sound familiar?
The same thing happened to me after driving the 912 I just picked up. I was able to identify the problem wheel by stopping and touching the wheels. The left front was scalding hot while the others were just warm to the touch. A new master cylinder, rebuild kits for all four calipers, all of the rubber hoses, pads and rotors are on their way to bring the brakes back to a safe, working state. Just learning about these cars myself. Having a blast so far! I knew I shouldn't have taken it out on the road so soon, but couldn't resist. Enjoy! Justin |

Good find. One thing about these early cars is they are very friendly to work on if you have some mechanical ability. With the internet there are plenty of boards out there to help you troubleshoot and walk you through the repair process.
A couple other sites you might find useful are 912 BBS - Welcome to 912BBS and 912VIN.com - The database for Vehicle Indentification Numbers ( VIN ) of the Porsche 912.. If your pedal pressure hasn't come back it could be a fluid thing, but I wouldn't rule out a bad master cylinder. Another common brake problem on cars kept mostly original and not driven often is failure (swelling) of the rubber brake lines. As they age the inside swells and does not allow the fluid to return, releasing the pressure. Let us know what you find out.

JW: You described it perfectly! I took it off the trailer near the TN line and rode it nearly non-stop for those 75 miles. I will let you know what the mechanic says when I take it in next week. You've just made it that much harder not to take it for a spin this weekend!
Thanks for the responses--I have joined the BBS forum and will jump on the 912 VIN site soon. Chall Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Matt,
Maybe in a few months when you're ready to go I will swing down to Charleston to see my friends there and we can caravan to the Gin Joint or Edmunds Oast in the 912's. Chall Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Anyone have experience with this radio?
The car currently has an aftermarket tape player in it (one of the few non-original parts) and I figure if it's going to have an aftermarket stereo it might as well be one that I can hook my iPod up to... Thanks! Chall Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Chall-
I plan on doing a minor resto. Really interested in just driving this one. Get yours right and swing down to Charleston. I've never heard of those places however, lol... The ebay stereo seems like a nice alternative to original. I'm also considering it. MattR |

Hello guys,
Don't mean to jump in, but keep me updated on the drive. I'm in Columbia and wouldn't mind a road-trip. Russell |

Chall,
There is a lot of 912 activity and knowledge in this area; there are five 912's in Black Mountain alone and I know of resto project currently happening in Arden. We also have a 912 Rendezvous in Asheville usually the second weekend in October. Fire me a PM and I'll provide contact info. Peter |

Hi Turpin, I will indeed! I always stop in Columbia to go to the huge Green's by the interstate and pick up some bourbons that I can't buy in NC.

Peter,
Awesome to hear from you--I'm so excited to hear that there are some other 912s around! I will send you a message now with my info: as soon as I get the brake thing figured out (appt Monday with the German Auto Werks guys on Sweeten Creek, have you ever used them?) I would definitely be up for swinging down the long way to BM via Highway 9 and meeting up for a beer if you fancy it. Chall Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I used GAW to mount the tires I purchased from Tire Rack; they did an excellent job! We also had a PCA Mountain Area meeting there with Scott explaining the use of certain chemicals in and around P-cars.
