Engine first start up after rebuilt

Hello Porsche family,

Need to know if someone can help with a start up question on my 68 912. First, let me say that the 5 speed transmission was rebuilt.

Since i'm using the actual transmission, bolted to the engine (still out of the car..) all in placed and ready to fired up, here is the question.

Do i need to put oil in the transmission case? Also, do i need to set the transmission at a certain gear before fired up? If so, how do set gear when the transmission is not installed in the car??

Thank you
Bao

You can grab the shifter shaft off the tail of the trans & still shift it. Put it in neutral. Do put gear lube in it as I dont want you spinning it to much without lubricant.

Sure, i can grab the shifter shaft.. but which direction or turn is neutral? right now when i turn back and forth you can hear a clicking sound. But to get it in neutral .. how? do i push in the shaft? or pull out?

Think about it fellow Porsche worker. Think about how the shaft turns when you use the shifter. If you have the engine & trans laid out like it was in the car then naturally rotating it to the right (looking into the tail shaft) would be like placing the shifter towards 1st. Then pushing the shaft inward would be like shoving it into that 1st gear. Its very simple if you just sit & think on it.

So finding neutral? Even easier. Its smack dab in the middle. If all else fails turn the axle stubs to see if you are free wheeling once you find that middle.

This is a breeze.
