Push Rod Tubes
I have a '69 912 engine that has leaking push rod tubes. I have reviewed a number of posts here that indicate ways to replace the tubes without pulling the engine. Is that really possible?

Well, there are expandable pushrod tubes for VW's but I haven't seen one for a 912. The problem is that the 912 pushrod tube has one long end that goes into the case to keep oil from flooding into the heads when taking sharp corners.

There are several types available. As an example, our host sells one version:

Well, I see that there are many options here. But for that much money, I would pull the motor and do a valve job. Then you can either put in new pushrod tubes ($130 from ********AZ) or just renew the seals. I haven't had a valve job done on a 912 for a long time, so I don't know what it costs, but you are approaching $400 if you buy 8 of those collapsible tubes.

it is a personal call, pushrod tubes available today are not great quality, and do not compress as the original ones did. Not sure if you are familiar with the cost involved in a current 616 engine rebuild or value but it is approaching or equal to a 911, the PM tubes will last forever and not leak, they also have better replaceable seals. This is not the world of VW stuff made in China.
As always, your car your choice, just one option. Regards |
