grinding noise

Hi,

I got a 68 912 which makes a grinding noise from the backside only when warm, with the gas pedal released , in gear and coming down in speed.
I already checked or had checked the gearbox, wheel bearings, half axles, end play and did rebuilt the cylinder heads
Has anyone of you had this on his 912?
Because it happens with a warm engine i think something gets too tight or to loose but what?
I hate to dismantle the engine completely without consulting this site first.

Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I had an odd noise in my wife's car that I was unable to isolate. Took it to my local garage where they attached a halfo dozen audio sensors to various points on the engine, transmission, Alternator, etc.

Once attached, thru headphones and a rotary switch to move between sensors, we were able to drive down the road and isolate the sound quickly.

Just a thought...

Probably not but....

I've run into grinding noises on a couple of my cars in the past...one(a VW Jetta) sounded like the wheel bearings were about to sieze...I spent a lot of money replacing bearings ,drive axles and then went on to any bushing and suspension part that could possibly be worn...still made noise. Turned out to be the simplest explanation that I overlooked...brakes!! Only made the sound after it had been drive a short distance...rand into the same thing last year with my Firebird(of course this time I looked at the cheapest thing first...brakes)...might be worth a look.

I have same thing, but its not that noticable. Maybe just the 'Nature of the beast'.

I had the car driven by two different car mechanics (VW and Porsche) and they both told me not to worry about it. A rebuilt gearbox always needs to be run in. With time things will improve.
I found the same comments in a gearbox rebuilt manual: ' a transmission , if realigned , will continue to howl when different wearing surfaces are presented to each other'.

Thanks for the comments and ideas,

Porsche Crest Grinders

Had a similar grinding noise in my 66. Warm, in gear slowing down. Turned out to be a very bad brake pad. Very cheap fix. Worth a try. Later DG

check your brake pads ASAP. I just had the same thing happening to my 914 last week. I had assumed it was rust on the rotors (car not driven for 5 years). WRONG! one of my rear pads was gone. Only the metal backing plate was left.
