carbs

I have a 912 Porsche and am tired of fighting the solex carbs and am thinking of switching to the EMPI 40 HPMX carbs. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these carbs.
Thanks

the solex is the carburetor designed for your Porsche ..... when the carbs are properly serviced they are trouble free and give years of service....no need to fiddle with them when normal service tune ups are performed.... you will be well served to send your carbs AND DISTRIBUTOR to be rebuilt. It is better to go with what is known, than to go with the unknown, or something that has little readily available support or information......

Hmm, Chineese copies of some pretty terrible carbs in a kit that was cobbled together on Alibaba. I think I'd pass.

You probably will have to have them rebuilt. There are a couple of places that can rebuild them like new. The EMPI carbs, out of the box, are most likely designed for the VW engine. They will then take a lot of sorting out to get them to work on a 912 engine. If it can even be done. An example is the 050 and 009 dist were designed for the VW engine. They will work on a 912, after a fashion. However, you will loose all kinds of performance do to their advance curve is wrong for 912 engine. The correct balance of the carb, dist and cam all work together to give you the Porsche 912 performance.

The only other known Carbs that work after some sorting out will be the Delardo's (SP) and Webbers. Even the newer ones of these are no longer the same as the originals.

I know, what do u think..
This is mission impossible..
I quick sale in ebay for my solex carbs in value 500€, and after bough 2-weber brand new "Fajs" carbs in value 300€.
200€ rest in my wallet, and problem resolve.
( the manifold not much, but I can make by home made)

Are your Solexes split shaft or single shaft? My mechanic had a hard time balancing my split shaft carbs. He suggested finding a set of single shafts. I've seen on eBay a guy selling a conversion kit.

Solid shaft vs split

What does the split shaft look like?

If you have a 68 or 69, then most likely you have the split shaft solex.

look at the pictures previously posted ..... just for area of reference .... were the thumb is seen. that is the area to look at to see if you have double shaft or single shaft... you will see that there is /or is not two shafts, one for each throat, that are united by an appiratice.....
