Send it to one of the speedometers shops that recondition the VDO instruments. In the US there are two on the west coast. They can calibrate it to any way you want it and change the color. Here they can change the clock to a quartz movement. The green on black is harder to read at night. So the factory went to white on black in 68 on.

If you are in Europe there should be several places in Germany. New (OEM) would be very hard to find in Europe and the US, used more likely.

Indeed Jaems, in Germany you'll find several repair shops for automotive instruments, some with specific skills regarding VDO instruments. To give you an idea, replacing a scale will cost you 100-125 Euro, depending on the repair shop of your choice. I guess that is comparable to the pricing in the US.

Complete sets of instruments are sold here for around 1000 Euro - the early green series even for more.

Changing into the early 912 style? Go for the 3-instrument dash. It will save you some money ...

Otto,

He has a 5 instrument 68.

Here are two in the US that have a great rep. They can change it to Kilometers and the oil pressure and temp to metric. You have to have the speedometer calibrated to the size tires your are using. So it would be better if you did it in Euro and maybe cheaper.

North Hollywood Speedometer | NH Speedometer

Since I have a Euro car mine are still metric.

Jaems,

I was just kidding. If he would "convert" his 5 instrument dash to a the early 3 instrument dash, he only would have to buy 3 instruments and saving money. Nonsense of course! Closing the 2 holes would cost ten times the gain of leaving two instruments. Sorry, humor cannot be translated. I shouldn't do that.

Otto,

Nothing wrong with your joke. I read it too fast and missed the "changing into the early 912 style?"

Actually, it wouldn't be too bad to weld up the two outer holes with an arc welder.. Then grind it down smooth and repaint the dash. You would have to also change the interior and the deck lid to look like a 65 or 66. Since the 67 also had 5 instruments and not the three. They would get you on the 128 vin and engine numbers.

I once had a 68 912 that had a 127 Vin number on the DMV registration, instead of the 128.
