Transmission re install

Hi
I'm about to install the engine/trans back into my 68 912.
I'm a little confuse on how to...

1. Position the transmission shift rod..at which position..neutral, gears?? and how to do so.

2. At the opposite end ... the shifter rod and coupler... where to position the coupler and shift lever? At what position, and how to do so.

I've research all over, and cannot find good articles on this issue.

Appreciate any help from Porsche family.

Much thanks
Bao

It doesn't really matter: reconnecting the shift connection is one of the last steps after the motor/transmission unit is installed/bolted up. That being said, I always push the shifter forward before disconnecting the linkage when removing the motor/transmission assembly, making the portion of the 'hockey stick' shift shaft exposed as short as possible. Once the grub bolt is removed, pulling the linkage apart is as easy as moving the shifter aft.

With the transmission out, you should be able to push the shift shaft in (R,2,4 for 5-speed, R,1,3 for a 4-speed - I think I have that right). This allows the motor/transmission to be in a closer position before the shift shaft has to enter the tunnel.
