My 912 parts car CHICKEN COOP!

Hey Pelican Parts forum 912'ers!

check out my great use of a parts car! it was a total rot box, so don't shed any tears!

Kevin

I have a vintage car habit, which my wife has also caught on to. I restore old cars, and my wife has an older Porsche that we are restoring.......which funnily brings us to the chicken coop. I bought a 1968 Porsche 912 (the four cylinder version of a 911) parts car to obtain some much-needed parts for Heather's 1966 Porsche restoration. The car had succumbed long ago to the ravages of rust and poor repairs and was destined for the scrap heap. I had completely stripped it down for spare parts and removed every bit off of it that I could salvage (to include the wheels, front and rear suspension, and all glass), it was a shell ready to be taken to the crusher.

Heather then came up with a brilliant idea after seeing an article where a person in the UK had converted an old Morris Minor Traveller (woody wagon) that had been totalled, into a chicken coop. "Why not make the Porsche parts car into a chicken coop?". Of course, she could not have had this moment of brilliance a few weeks prior when the car was on all four wheels and had it's doors and fenders on it!

So, after many weeks of "rebuilding" the parts car into something that resembles a car again, here is what we came up with:

Look a bit closer and you will see:
The floors are cut out with heavy hardware cloth taking their place.
Door glass replaced with plexiglass and window openings covered with hardware cloth.
Firewall between engine compartment cut out for nest boxes.
"trunk" closed up and used to keep all of our feed and treats.
Completely closed up to prevent predators from getting in.
Functioning doors, trunk and hood, in addition to steering and rolling (a chicken tractor..er..Porsche )
More pics:

It has been very hot here, and I am glad to say that during the day, when the doors are open and the trunk is open, it stays at ambient temp inside the coop!

During the day, the hens are happy to graze and feed and hang out under the coop (taking dirt baths), they seem very content!
Content to give us their first egg on their first day!

Needless to say, we are thrilled with our coop and love having chickens! (and eggs :eat: )

Makes the chicken coop into a "stealth" coop, heck, its just another car on the farm!

Thanks for looking!

Kevin and Heather

Cool, but the practical side of me says that is a VERY EXPENSIVE chicken coop! I see lots of items on the car that would bring good money when added up. Door handles, headlights, all brightwork including window frames, horn grills, headlight rings, a deck lid, a hood, etc........But, it is a pretty cool coop if that is your thing!

Thanks for sharing, Craig

yep, but all of the parts you speak of are in pretty ratty shape needing rechroming. The window frames, people didn't want to give me $25 each, so to the "coop" pile they went!
Now my barnyard speaks about my cars inside the barn. AND a rusted out tub is living on as a thing of beauty! And a great home for my egg laying ladies!
Yep, not everyone's thing, but a better use of a parts car than gathering leaves and dirt!

Thanks for looking, now back to restoring my wife's 66 912!

keep turning those wrenches!
Kevin

Ah ha...well, they are still rolling in style...ha

Do you happen to have the inside rear view mirror for the car? Also, is that front "S" spoiler steel? I have a 68 and would have an interest in some parts, but I don't want to render the chicks homeless....

One last comment....

I too think it is very cool....!!!!!!........Not sure what kind of traffic flows past your house/farm/chicken coop, but have you thought about how many times you are going to get a knock at the door with someone standing there saying:

"Hey buddy, is that Porsche for sale"?

If that was sitting in a yard/farm here in Georgia, it would likely be a daily occurrence

Seems like a Mini Coop would be more appropriate?

My wife seems to think this is currently a good idea with an old project 912 I have. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I find this sort of endearing and sad all at the same time. Sad mostly because that car is probably in better shape than mine.
