356 Tech Session

Saturday morning I was invited to a 356 owners tech session at a 356 shop in Glenview IL. It was a very informative meeting on engine problems and sheet metal repair. Stressed that you can never tell what lies beneath the paint no matter who you are! The better it looks the greater the chance of a body problem. They showed examples of welded together body parts that were horrible and plain dangerous. All hidden by bondo and a nice paint job.

Learned a lot, nice bunch of guys, all 356 owners, some had more than one. My friend had his 1961 Super 90 at the event. It was started after 20 years of storage in an Arizona garage. Beautiful white with red upolstery and a factory sun roof (mechanical). The shop owner said it was the most rust free 356 he had ever seen. Needs brakes and some minor things.

He also had in the shop a 69 912 Targa (silver color) with some engine damage, brass in the oil filter. A beautiful blue 1955 356 cabrolet and two red 356 C's and a couple of engines. And shelves full of parts.

FYI

Ron,

Sounds like you have hooked up with a pretty good bunch. I have found that 356 owners are more responsive to the 912 than other Porsche owners.

356 folks also tend to have much better "road stories" too.

I have found the same thing here in Australia. The 911 boys really don't want to know us. We join the local 356 club, these guys are alot more level headed and extremly helpfull. (I will admit 911 ownership has been my life long ambition(all 26yrs).

Thumbs up

I have not gone to 6cyl power just for the above reasons. The "Men in plaid" network is the best! No head trip wannabe types and lots of good info from great folks. Your motor is your ticket into the club, in my experence no one will snub you if the car it is in looks a little newer than a 356.

It's good to see that it is not just my experence and looking at this sample, seems to be the norm world wide.
