Idling at 3k

I just went out to start of the teener to see if it would turn over. After I jumped it the thing turned over, although once started , the rpm shot up to 3K imediatelly and was slowley rising. What could be the cause of this? I have been looking around the engine compartment more recently, and by hand moving the throttle. I'm a novice mechanic, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

Do a search for vaccum leaks on this site. Youll find all kinds of info.

Could also be the throttle position switch is not set properly. Fairly easy to readjust, there is a tech article on this board

Thanks, Guys. I Just realized that when I was out in looking at the engine the other day, I saw a loose hose. Went out there again tonight, Hooked it back up, started the car, and it idled at around 1500, which is normal for me at least. This was the first thing I've ever personally fixed on the car, so I was pumped. Really makes you feel good to fix your own problems .
Thanks,
Eric

Now you're officially a 914 mechanic. Welcome to the club!

9Forteen - About six months ago I was you. I actually had to have somebody show me where the engine was. Since then I have pulled and cleaned the fuel injectors, replaced all the fuel lines, adjusted the timing (poorly), cleaned the points, and several other previously unthinkable tasks. My unsolicited advice to you? Buy a bar of LAVA soap!!! And just remember to have fun!

Potter- Lol, Yeah, I'm really looking forward to doing a full on rebulid of the engine next winter. Sounds like it's possiable for even me . The only thing in my way is getting the dam front end of this thing fixed!

My advise is to get some of the blue surgical gloves that our sponsor sells when working on your car. I used mechanix gloves forever but then used a pair of these at a buddies house. They are the most amazing latex ~style~ glove that I have ever used. They don't hardly ever break yet you have enough sensitivity to thread a small screw with your fingertips. When you are all done, you barely have to wash your hands....peter..P.S., anyone notice how much this post sounds like a condom commercial?
