Bronze Shift Bushings

Ok, So a buddy gave me a bronze rear shift bushing a while ago and today I installed it while I was under the car.

But...It's not really much tighter than the wore out old plastic one.

I wonder if it is supposed to be so loose, it is metal and it is cold so when it gets to operating temp I know it will expand...

Has anyone else used these?

Thanks guys.

Could be the shift arm is worn out too. Try knurling the brushing some to tighten the fit.

I make my own bushing and do it for some of the locals. Geoff is right the arm wears.
I make mine under-size and hone to fit, but also the housing wears, so I also make them over-size and ream the housing to fit. I don't think a generic bronze bushing is a great idea.

Which ever type of bushing you use, if it is loose and the shaft is worn you can either weld build the shaft and have it machined to new, or as I did use several wire ties through the bushing and around the outer side of the boss it is in to tighten things up. When things get loose again, use new ties ti tighten things. Good luck.

it isn't really loose in the housing, the shift linkage is loose in the bushing.

Sounds to me like it's a bad substitute.

Crap.

Hmmm... I do not think that the operating temperature is so much higher - it is outside the transmission. I do not think that the minimal expansion due to temperature will make a big difference.
It might be a not so accurately manufactured part...

I had a new shaft (NOS) in my race car and it was loose in the new bushings. I think it was just made that way since I remember interviews of old factory drivers and thay all said the same thing; The shifting has to be slow and positive and it will be fine! I think these are trannys and cars designed for longer circuit races and not what we are doing with them now such as auto-x and DE events on short courses. I have driven with lots of drivers and every one of them shifts different, some slow and some fast but all wish things were like a new 996 transmission, but we'll just have to suffer!!!!
