setting static timing

Hey all,

Here's a stupidly simple problem that I could use help on.

How do you set the static timing on a 2L 914?? I just rebuild the engine and set the rotor in the dizzy to the little mark on the dizzy body while the "timing mark" on the impeller was right on the notch. This seems like it should be set. Then I though, "Hell I'm 180 off!" So I set it 180 and still no love.. .

Yes I made sure, five times with a check list, that I got the timing gear on the cam & crank meshed correctly. I'm getting fire, hell even a few pops from the thing, I just need to know static timing. . .

Thanks
Ian
