Transmission Seal
Hello~
Does anyone know the procedure for removing and replacing the Mainshaft Seal? (http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/Parts/Transmission/bearings_big.htm) part # 6 Thanks, ~Eric

I just did it on my car last month.
Getting the old seal out is a PITA. I was glad nobody was around to see what the old seal looked like when I finally got it out. The job would be a piece of cake w/ one of those slide hammer hook / seal puller tools. Mark 73 2.0

It is very very very easy, if you pull the entire tranny apart. Never tried to do it with the mainshaft still in place.

That's pretty good. I should send all my stuff up there for work!

James,
My car's mechanic is Frank Allers. He has his own independent Porsche repair shop and he has at least 20 years experience working on Porsches. He also races (I see him on the Speed channel occasionally). I think that the Cdn $35 is for 1/2 hour labor. Alfred |

The original seals with the lip on them are not too bad to remove with the shaft in. The new ones, I don't know. That'd be a tough job and you don't want to nick the shaft. Just getting into this tranny stuff myself due to necessity and I'd be tempted to pull the gear stack and change all the gaskets and seals. I'm doing that now. I had a hell of a time removing one of the new style front seal with the stack and diff out of the case. I think the sucker glued it in.

I just did mine a week or so ago. I used a slide hammer with a pick attachment. Popped right out. The new one I put in with a tube that fit over the seal around the edge and tapped it in with a hammer. Worked great.

And you still had the shaft in place when you did this? I spent 2 hours trying to unsuccessfully remove it this weekend !
Any (more) help or advice would be great! ~Eric

You need a hook on the end of a slide hammer. Just bend something to fit the hammer and pull it out, moving the hook around the seal to pull it evenly.

I drilled 1/8" holes in the old seal at 9 o'clock & 3 o'clock. Threaded a short sheet metal screw into the holes. Used a small block of wood as a fulcrum to pry the seal out with a pry bar.
WARNING, don't drill the holes too close to the outside edge of the old seal. The old seal has a flange on it & if you drill into the flange you will drill into the case of the transmission.
