The holes are not offset--the original cam gears were riveted to the camshafts, so there was no need to make it so that they went together one way only.

You can mock things up--take the case and put the crank, cam, and a not-bolted-on cam gear in it. Put the cam gear in so that the two teeth with dots on them are on either side of the single crank gear tooth with a dot, just like normal.

Turn the crank so that #1 is at TDC, with the #1 rod journal all the way toward the #1/#2 cylinder head's location. Then spin the cam gear around so that both the intake and exhaust cam lobes are pointing away from the cylinder #1 lifter bores. Then turn the cam some each way, looking for the closest way that the bolt holes line up. That should be the way they go.

Or you could wait for someone who has a cam with gear attached to go look. I won't be able to check mine until tonight at the earliest, and I'll probably forget.

Hi,

The holes are slightly offset. The gear only goes on one way.
Have the holes countersunk while they are working on it.

Hmm, I don't remember it being offset! Maybe I was just lucky and had it line up???

Dave,

You made me run into the garage and check. I used 2 different cams, a stock gear, and a WebCam gear and visually inspected an unmolested stock cam. The spacing between 2 of the rivets is slightly smaller than the rest of them. If the gear is not on the cam correctly, you won't be able to thread all of the bolts. Of course you only notice this when you're putting the last one in.
