Legg Room with console
I want to install a center console in my 76 but I am concerned about foot/leg room. I am 6 3" and just looking at where my right leg and right foot are positioned and imagining a console it looks pretty tight. Does anyone have experience with a console ?
Thanks Neal |

I removed mine to get some open space. I'm 5'10"
But I think it's just personal preference, I know a guy who has one who is 6'4" and he wouldn't dream of removing it.

Mike, what was it about the room ?, was it your knee or your
throttle foot ?, I think I might not be able to depress the pedal. let me know please Neal |

The front end (for of the car) of the console angles away from the driver's side. (The sides are mostly parallel, but the left side of the console turns to the right and meets the right edge at the front part of the console.) You do not wind up losing that much room, to my view.
You lose a lot more footroom with the A/C installation; the impeller fan up front was right in the way of my feet when I drove an AC-equipped car. --DD

I am 6'3" and love my center console. My center console has a storage bin with a cover at the perfect height to rest my elbow on. I haven't found any issues with leg or footroom. I am using a Momo wheel which does help the knee room a bit. Barry ![]()

I was just slightly annoyed with having my leg up against the console, that's all.
So, I removed it. It seemed to open up the interior a great deal but I wouldn't say I really gained any leg room (or needed it). I think a smaller steering wheel would help that more.

Your replys are great, thanks a bunch. I am going to make the leap and go for it. I have always loved the way the consoles look.

The center console IMHO completes the interior. The interior is very spartan but I think the console ties it together nicely for a street car.
My 70 had no console and my 74 has one and I didnt notice any legroom differences(although I am only an mere 5' 10") |

i installed a console, then removed it due to lack of footroom (size 9). the right side of the shoe rubbed against the console and the left side rubbed against the brake pedal.

I like the 914 with and without the console. Without a console the open cockpit under the dash reminds me of older Porsches, 356's and 911's. It is more sparten but I like the open feeling. On the other hand I like the console with gauge space too. Just a personnal choice.

I don't like them.
I am 6.0 and they make the right side of my right leg sweat like a dictator who is out of time. I like the gauges, but I like them combined, and on the left. ![]() M

Hi,
I drove my 914 for the first couple of month with out the console, until I finished the upholstery on the thing. After I installed it I did not feel restricted in my motions. Also transpiration on my right leg has not increased significantly. There are some other issues with the console... The gauges are not exactly in my field of vision, requiring me to look down in the car. While I feel like the voltage reading of the voltmeter is kind of redundant information in general I which the oil temp gauge would provide a some sort of valid measurements. Oil temperature readings in C or F would be nice, head temperature (of each head) and/or oil pressure would be more useful than U in [V]. A definite plus about the console is the space around the shifter… … good place to dump some stuff without having it flying through the car during the next turn. Patrick
