914/4 oil strainer/sump screen

I opened the sump thing , held by one single "nut". No washers , nothing. Was really tight!Cleaned out 20 years of stuff from there. Now on reassembly , I put everything back... and when home checked the pictures from PP pages. And there should be a washer! DAMN !Read also from a book , that it should not be too tight! OH s...! Guess did I tighten it , because it WAS tight! Anyway , I did not change gaskets either , they were so stuck , and I was not sure if I really should replace them.... Should I now open it again? Change both gaskets , and find that missing washer? I do have the new gaskets , and a strange looking metallic washer that I donīt know where it belongs...shiny , aluminium looking , roundish... donīt tell me this is the one I SHOULD have put there.... Anyone know?It takes only 5-10 minutes to redo it , though.

i wouldn't redo it if it doesn't leak. be very careful, that nut should only be tightened to about 9.4 ft lb....VERY IMPORTANT for sake of engine block.

Yeps , I do know ( NOW! ) it should not be too tight... It would be wise to sometimes plan ahead , read the instructions/drawings/schemas first and then start working! I was lying under the car ,and just fought of opening that too see what is in there! And naturally I also believed that putting it back is easy.It was... how do they say it in HAYNES manuals...I did just that way!

The aluminum (or copper) crush washer goes between the nut (it looks like a bolt, but it's a nut) and the sump plate. I think it is there to help keep the oil from leaking out around the head of the nut.

Ok guys , thank you! I did what was recommended.Took it apart , changed the gaskets , found this missing crushwasher. It was so tightly squeezed , it was invisible! With a small sharp screwdrived it came visible , took it out.Fitted also the new one.Did not overtighten , this time. No leaks after testing. Iīll have to keep on eye , though.
