Why do you need them on a 914? They make sense on a Bug or a 911, where the heads have to come off to replace the PR tube seals... But on a 914, you just pop the tubes out, replace the seals, and put 'em back in again.
Try warm milk. ![]() --DD

Oh yeah, you have to pull the rocker shafts and pushrods. Then just pop the tubes out toward the outside of the car, and slidethe tube out.

Junk.................Stock or leave it apart. If that means cutting and welding to get the right length, do it.

Yes, John--that's exactly what we mean. The tubes slide in through the head. You can pull them halfway out and replace the seals (tough to pull some of them all the way out because of the position of the suspension console) relatively easily.

I'd pull them all the way out instead of trying to R&R them while still somewhat inside the head.
A few tips: If the tubes do not come out easy, use an open end wrench slid up against the tube where it flares up to a larger dia. Tap the wrench and the tube will pop out. To install the tubes, use a socket that will fit into the tube and tap with a hammer, make sure that the end that goes into the block is lined up correctly or you may damage the tube if smacked hard enough. I just did this a few weeks ago. Messy job, but not too bad.

Mike, it's kinda non-trivial to remove the tubes completely when the engine is in the car. (Yours is out, right?) The suspension console gets in the way, as do a few other things. You can feed them back into the inside (i.e., slide them inward toward the crankshaft but lower), but that's an extra trip through the hole in the head for the seals and isn't really worth it IMHO. Easier and less chance of damaging something if you leave the tube hanging in the head.

I replaced the seals while the motor was installed in the car.
To me, it's better to fully remove the tubes since one can clean them and inspect them much easier. My motor was very dirty underneath it, so I felt it better to remove the tubes and clean them before I re-installed them. You should know me better than that, I never do anything "easy" ![]() |
