Looking for pictures of a '74 LE (ivory/white and orange accents)
I would like to what this combo looks like when done
to factory specs. Is it too much orange against the lighter color? Thanks Mueller

Sorry, I can't help with pictures, but I do remember having seen a couple of white and orange LE's. I liked them more than the black and yellow cars, the color contrast did not seem as intense. I think the paint scheme was the same as the black and yellow cars. Now I like them both, although I haven't seen a white and orange one for years. There is a black and yellow one in my area which I have seen in the past year. I have never seen a white and green LE. I will say one thing, if not cared for the black and yellow cars can really look bad. Like any car with a flashy paint job they don't take well to neglect.

thanks ruddyboys,
a few people have sent me that picture, i was told the vinyl on the targa bar is not correct. i'd like to see one without the PORSCHE script and the side moulding if anyone has a picture. Thanks

I have some shots of a phoenix red/white LE on my computer at home (currently at the office.) They were from an ebay auction way back when. I'll try to remember to post em when I get home, if I forget, then just mail me Mueller. =o)

if the LE's were ivory/phoenix red, the color in the pic posted here looks way off. my phoenix red is a lot more orange. I don't like the look in that pic, but if it were more orange I think it'd be pretty sharp.

The orange in the photo of the "Creamsicle" car above is indeed way off. Not sure if someone saw "Phoenix Red" listed as the color and tried to make it red, or if the photo is just off, but the real color is very much orange.
The vinyl on the targa bar is, from what I have read, not original. I have yet to see a US-market LE without the PORSCHE side-stripe in the trim color. The official Porsche website at one time had one of a European LE (bumblebee) without the stripe. It was listed as a 1975 914, which it wasn't. Not sure if they still have the pic around or not. --DD

Right-O Dave. US LE cars did not get roll bar vinyl, and also received the negative side stripes from the factory, in the appropriate accent colors.
The Euro LE on the porsche website is gone, but the same photo is photographed from Brian Longs book shown below. The euro LEs did get roll bar vinyl and plain side stripes as the photo shows. I have yet to see a US-market LE without the PORSCHE side-stripe in the trim color. The official Porsche website at one time had one of a European LE (bumblebee) without the stripe. It was listed as a 1975 914, which it wasn't. Not sure if they still have the pic around or not.> |

Your Bumblebee looks great bowlsby. I was wondering if you can post some more pics. A good LE pic is hard to comeby.

Where can you get the logo stripe? My '74 LE does not have it.

John, the side stripes used to be available from all the usual places, I assume including Pelican. If that is no longer true, they also show up on ebay from time to time, including in the LE colors, although they are not cheap.
Here is a pic showing what I think is very accurate colors for a Dreamsicle car. This car won the concours at the Porsche Parade several years ago and was painstakingly prepared for that victory. It changed hands this Spring. I was ready to buy it but my wife, who I keep hoping to lure into the 914 hobby, could not warm to the color scheme. IMHO, all the LE cars are very "strong" in appearance and people tend to love 'em or hate 'em. I remember a mini-review in one of the car mags at the time they were released called them "garish"--and that was in the '70s! ![]() I guess they are a bit of an acquired taste, but I like the looks of the Dreamsicle and Bumble Bee LEs, at least when they are all clean and shiny.

Good luck with that.... I know a certain place in the Southeast has them, but I hear that they are not quite the right colors!! Best bet is probably to have them made up to match your trim color. I'm not sure if you can still get the "negative" stripes like that in other colors; if so then you could use one as a template.

Mine is the more common black/yellow version. I saw a posting that the stripes are available via Automobile Atlanta but I haven't looked there yet.
First priority is to repaint, the color is pretty dead on this 28 yr old car. Thanks for the info! ![]() |
