Help ID Tachometer
While cleaning out some old parts in preparation for an upcoming swap meet I found this tachometer. It came out of a 914/6 race car that I purchased a few years back. I don't need it and plan to sell but have no idea what it actually come out of or what it is worth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. ![]()

Obviously it's not a stock 914 part, as those would have a redline marked that is pretty low.
It's a 74+ tach, as shown by the black center and the single turn signal indicator. It may have been a 914 tach originally, but if so it has been modified. A quick search seems to show that 74+ 911 tachs still had two turn signal indicators rather than the single one shown here. Or none at all. So my best guess is that this is in fact a 74-76 914 tach that has been modified, likely by a VDO shop such as North Hollywood Speedometer or Palo Alto Speedometer. I cannot see any part numbers on the back of the tach to confirm--I can't even read the date stamp! If you can make any of those out, please post them and we may be able to figure out more. --DD

Thank you, that's a big help. I didn't understand the no redline marks and I have searched the back with a magnifying glass with no luck. Any idea what it is worth or what I should ask for it? Again, thanks.

I don't really have a clue about value. It costs a moderate amount (in the few hundreds IIRC) to have a tach rebuilt and modified, so that would argue for a higher price. If the car it came from had interesting documented history, that might also argue for a higher price.
But this is set up for a six-cylinder (presumably??) motor in a car with only one turn signal indicator, so that says only 74-76 914s. Which means the market is very much smaller, which argues for a lower price. You should probably verify that the tach functions and if it is set up for four cylinders or six (it counts ignition pulses, so a six-cylinder tach in a four-cylinder car will read 2/3 of the actual RPM--ask me how I know) and then you could start by asking for more than a stock tach and see if anyone bites. --DD
