First time for everything

Hey Crew,

For the first time in my life I have a vw, strike that, porsche aircooled engine that might run too cold. Know, I will confess that I am using the stock temperature gauge to measure temps. However, follow this logic. The gauge, sender, wiring, connections have remained constant trough out the process.

Previous to the last engine out and in ... The stock gauge would run about half way up the "ok" scale never getting into the red. The last engine episode, I decided to lower the compression from 8.5:1 to 7.9:1. "shimmed the cylinders...valve geometry...blah blah blah. I also got rid of the Total Seal rings that never did seat.

I also replaced the Tstat at this time as the old one finally gave up.

Now, On a 70 degree day, running hard on the back roads, or sitting in traffic @ idle, @ it's hottest I get is the needle almost to touch the bottom of the T as in Temp.

I must addmit that I never "adjusted": the T Stat. Never had to. I figure that it, the thermostat, needed to slowly open to max to make for a speedy warm up. I ussually just check to see that the flaps are max open after getting the needle to stop rising. Maybe, max open air is too much during a chilly morning or cool afternoon...

Are there any tricks to setting the Stat?

I have always had a "hotter" than I would like running engine.

Thoughts?
