Talking breath of life

After 5 years of blood, sweat and quite a bouts of ranting and raving my 76 is running. Despite all the problems caused by the PO screw ups. Now to to get it to the inspection station and to Lynchburg, Thats another story.

Congrats on the car! It is a good feeling isn't it? State Inspection!?!!?? Get the antique tags, no inspection, no emissions, no car tax, no renewal!

Unlike the Cali members, VA likes us and our cars!

Things done:
1 Redo engine P&C the whole nine yards with parts from Pelican (wink wink) because PO let engine sit for 3 years without even torning the crank to keep it free
2 replace clutch that PO didnt replace that led to condition in step 1
3 try to get FI working unsuccessfuly which led to Webers
4 swap trans see step 2 (locked in two gears)
5 replace all calipers and rotors
6 and anything else that came along (ie starter)

Still to do cosmetic work but no pan or right supension or battery tray work thats one thing the PO did right (other than selling to me) going to get it inspested in the AM

I decided not to register my car an antique due to the restrictions (from the VA DMV website):

Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:
Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events.
Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
You may not, however, use your vehicle for general, daily transportation. This includes, but is not limited to, driving to and from work.

Chances are you wouldn't run into any problems, but i didn't feel like dealing with it. I don't think Lynchburg has emissions, but a 76 would be exempt anyway.

I do like the looks of the antique tags, so you can find a set of VA tags stamped in the same year as your car (look on evilBay), and register your car for general transportation with vintage tags. This doesn't have any benefits, but the black and white tags look cool:

I guess getting the cali smog test is worth being able to drive the car to work every day... Okay, I'm officially jealous

Now I thought (for the VA people here) that a car was only exempt from emissions if it was registered as an antique, is this true?

No. Anything over 25 years old is exempt from emissions. Registering as an antique gets you out of state safety inspections, because of the driving restrictions.

I have my 914 registered with Antique plates. This will be my first year with the car running so I will be test riving the car alot. I also don't want some unknown person (mechanic) driving my car and f-n somthing up because he can't shift the car crorrectly.

If the first year (summer) goes by well I'll get normal plates.

If you take it for an inspection STAY with your car. Don't drop it off!!!! I bet they would love to take a neat little sports car out for a spin.

"occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence"

Occasional is not defined..Just don't drive it everyday to work, just occasionally around town, at your discression. I have talked to some local police officers and they just don't want to see you causing any trouble, No street racing or showing off the power behind these 914's
The Antique plates look very similar to the old regular plates (as shown below) so a random stop because of plates would be very rare or unlikely.

I think for your first year while you are working out the bugs and problems that WILL show up the Antique plates are the way to go.

Best of luck and give me a shout if you are ever in Richmond

Got it inspected this AM. New brakes new rotors rebuilt calipers. I dared them to find anything wrong. Drive to get it inspected was a blast. Can wait to be able to use it on a daily basis.
