Looking for a good shop (or a guru) to help upgrade the condition of my 914
Hi Folks!
I'm in Long Beach CA. I've got a lovely little 914 that is actually my only car (!) It runs very well but has a growing list of things I'd like to fix. I don't really have a place to work on it right now so I'm looking either for a shop to do the work or someone who'd be up for working on it with me. I'm not a newbie as I've been working on the car for 20 years but I'm by no means what I'd call a real car mechanic. Anyway, here's what I want to do: LITTLE STUFF 1. It drips too much oil. Used to be not so bad but now it's crossed the line. May be coming from the "tuna can" but maybe other places as well. What are the chances of really fixing this "right"? 2. There's something funny with the gearshift lever. It's basically out of alignment side-to-side but I think something's loose as it comes into and then back out of alignment. When out of alignment it blocks trying to go into 1st (because it goes too far toward the driver) and can't go into 5th, again because it's too far toward the driver. But if I shift into 3rd while stationary it seems to "reset" the alignment and I can again properly shift into 1st and 5th. 3. When coming to a stop, the idle usually rests too high - almost 1500. Blooping the throttle will usually bring it down to ~1000. Mechanical linkage seems to be moving freely. 4. Probably have to replace the generator. It's been fine the past few weeks but for a while the light was coming on in sync with a nasty sound that I suspect is the generator bearings complaining. BIG(er?) STUFF New mirrors New seatbelts New interior So what do you all think? Anyone who wants to do this with me at their place? Anyone have suggestions where in the area they suggest I go to get some or all of this done well and hopefully at a fair price? Thanks! Joe |
