Front disc problem

Hi all,
I finally sandblasted the sheetmetal disc brake guards, painted them and today I installed them. I slid on the new disc rotor that I got from P.P. and it bottoms out and hits the sheetmetal. What gives? Did I get a pre 73' disc by mistake. How are the pre 73' discs different? There isn't enough threads on the hub to install the clamp nut. By the way I have a 1973. I also can't compare the new discs with the old since I discarded the old ones. Can anyone shed some light on my dilema? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you got an early set of discs.
It happens.
Lay one flat on the ground and measure the offset by laying a stright edge across top and measure to the face of the disc. Post what the measurement is and I'll check it with my '73.

Hi Paul,
I measured 2 7/16" to the face and 2 7/8" to the back of the disc. Thanks

I measured mine while on the car-it looks like from the disc face to the wheel mounting surface there is 2 1/2". So yours is further to the inside by 1/16". Does that sound right?

you don't have the backing plate on wrong side out do you? the curved outer edge side faces the center line of the car, not covering the rotor.

Kevin,
Am I an idiot or what. It's been awhile since I had the brakes off, I just assumed that the shield cuved towards the rotor. I tried looking at different pictures in the Haynes manual but not too many good ones. I'll turn those buggers around. Thanks a bunch. Hope it works.

i just did my brakes too. painted the backing plates too. guess why i thought that might be the problem? luckily i did one side at a time. only had to redo one.

Kevin,

Thanks a lot! They went on just fine but it still looks odd. It still seems the curved part would protect the disc. But what the hell do I know. Just when I thought I was semi mechanical. shesh:D

Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to check the measurements.SmileWavy
