I bought a rear view mirrow that mounts to the center mount
for the sun visors. QUES. is how do I get the old one that's glued to the windshield off with out breaking anything. ( windshield). I't a stock glued on one. Is there a solvent to desolve the glue. Or do VERY carefuly chip away at it. Some one out there has to have taken one off before. Thanks all in advance. DAVE ![]() ![]()

I used alot of goo gone, chipped at it, and pulled it off, may not be the smartest idea

maybe heat the outside of the glass with a hair dryer, and gently rock it off?

Sorry I can't help... I'm just amazed it hasn't fallen off already!
You might call up your local windshield dealer and ask how they do it...

I'd say that setting a priceless crystal vase down by the shifter and then really hoping nothing bad will happen to it should just about do it. Chances are excellent you will be shop-vacuuming in between five and ten minutes.

I'm with Chris Reale. Heat gun on the outside.
Dave, unless the sticky-pad has been replaced it's usually pretty weak and comes off easy... but then there are the exceptions.

I'd be really careful with a putty knife Dave. Windshields for 914s are big $$$ these days. Heat it up a bit and try to rock it off carefully. If it won't budge you could try some sort of glue solvent to get some of the goop off, then back to the dryer if necessary. Prying it with a putty knife would be your last resort IMHO. I would not do that.
Good Luck, and see ya later this year.

The heat question depends on what the mirror is attached by; if it uses one of those black pads it might work (but v. doubtful, remember, the windshield in the sun already gets a lot warmer than anything your hair dryer will do) but I would go for the goo gone and a single edge razor blade (or Xacto knife). If the PO used the loctite windshield mirror glue (e.g., no black pad) then skip the goo gone and scrape at it with the corner of the single edge razor blade (that's how I did it). Or just go with Potters' idea. But nothing so thick as a putty knife.

You could always do it the way that works for me everytime. I usually ram my head into it while cleaning the windsheild and it just falls off. That has happened to me twice so far. Just thought I would mention it. It is a little hard on the forehead.

If it is installed with stock adhesive onto the glass it comes off easy.
The adhesive will easily fail in SHEAR...like a cleavage membrane, remember how mica has layers? Same principal. Use a STIFF blade putty knife and shove it briskly into the joint between the glass and the mirror base...right into the cleavage line. Do n ot impose bending stress onto the glass...you may be sorry! Voila. Catch the mirror it as it falls and dont ram it too hard or you'll damage the foam trim...

RE new mirror
Hi Dave
I saw a mirror like you described on ebay. Please tell us if it improves rear vision. It looks like it would mount a bit higher than the glue mounted mirror, or is it designed so it hangs down to the same height. Once attached does it feel structurally sound, or does it feel wobbly. thanks Mark |

Try 3M adhesive remover, Dave, and let it soak in good. you'll probably need to peel it off in layers, but it will come off eventually without breaking your windshield. You can buy the stuff at B&W Paints in Toledo.
Dave

Yes, It is mouned very sound, and solid improves rear vision , doesn't hang down as far as stock. it's adjustable so you get the same image, doesn't seem to get in the way like the stock placement ,i.e. cleaning dash, and moving around in side the car working on verious things. of course i'am 280 we all know the cure for that . GIVE ME A WEEK AND I'LL POST AGAIN ON THE MIRROR AND THE SELLER. DAVE
