Set engine timing

Hello, need a little help getting the timing set on my 914 1.7 engine. I have the timing gun connected to the number 1 plug wire and I have removed the plastic plug over the crank shaft pulley. I see the blower housing notch but when I run the engine around 3500 rpm and turn on the timing gun I do not see any timing marks at all. The manual tells me there should be a white line, a black line and a red line on the pulley. I need to set the timing at 27 degrees BTDC.

The marks are not on the pulley part of the fan, they are on the back of it right where the notch is. You either need a mirror to see them in the car, or you need to get your head way into the engine bay. Pelican has a Tech Article that... Ugh, the redesign has lost the photos.

Here's an archived version with the photos: https://web.archive.org/web/20160204070419/https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_timing/914_timing.htm

If you still don't see the marks, try turning the engine slowly (you can use a wrench on the alternator pulley bolt) so you can look for them more carefully.
