spraying oil out exhaust - any clues?

Just found my friend a 75 2.0 for $800. One thing we noticed, when u start it up, seems like its spraying a little oil out the exhaust. I assume its not gas mixed with the soot in the exhaust.
Any ideas on whats causing that and whats involved in the repair? Engine runs strong and has good power.

Thanks

Any oil getting into the combustion chamber or exhaust port is likely to come out as smoke. It is a lot more common to get water (combustion byproduct) mixed with soot coming out the pipe.

Does it feel oily? Does it smell oily? (After you get it away from the exhaust pipe of course.)

Dave, thanks for the prompt reply. We will verify if it's oil or soot.

how long had the engine been sitting? I know with the last motor my dad built it had been sitting for 10 years after he built it and so the rings got stuck on the pistons and they never seated. The engine ran great but it smoked some and blew oil out everywhere.

My new engine literally dropped oil out of the exhaust pipe when first run. It was running way rich too. Rejetted and got a couple miles on the motor and it's stopped.
