Thumbs up Fuel Injection Ques.

I have a 73, 1.7. with a Carb. It will not pass Dave's Float test. I want to convert back to F.I. I have a chance to get a complete 1970 F.I. system. Is there a difference between the F.I. on a 1970 and one on a 1973. If so what? If there is then should I be paitence and just wait for a 1973 one to come along? THanks Dave
P.S. P.O. put the carb on not me!

I think as long as all the FI components match (ECU, MPS, CHT) it will work. Your 73 is a 1.7, and the 1970's were 1.7's, but maybe there is something I am overlooking. There is a 1.7 system on ebay right now. Good luck, the stock injection rules!

Isn't the only difference the aux.air reg. 70 and 71 is one wire and different shape and also 73 has decelaration valve 71 does not. not sure but ..... do you actually need decel valve????

No, you don't need a decel valve.
The 73 ECU has the idle mix control on it which is nice. All the 1.7 MPS will swap. I would get it and if you later locate the 73 pieces you can add them on.The 73 Air filter is the one to get as it uses a paper filter instead of being an oil bath set up.
I have a 73 ECU in my parts bin, also a 049 MPS.

Remember, if you have a non-stock cam it will be challenging (or worse!) to get the D-jet to run well with it.

f.I.

Dave D. How do I tell if it has a stock cam. Engine was Rebuilt 20,000 to 30,000 miles ago. That,s when the carb was installed.
Is there a easy or even a not so easy to confirm it. Thanks Dave

Well, if you can get it to idle you can check how much vacuum is drawn at idle. I think the D-jet likes at least 15" at idle? That will at least tell you if you're close...

But the only real way to tell for certain without tearing the engine down is to set up a jig and fixture to hold one of the pushrods and measure the cam lift at different points in the rotation. Non-trivial... You may be able to measure the pushrod side of the rocker arm, but there will be errors introduced there.

I kinda doubt that someone would put anything but a stock cam in a engine that they cheaped out on and installed a single carb on. The FI should work fine, but check your vacuum as DD suggested.

I'll say what DD said in a slightly different way - it doesn't matter too much what cam it is, as long as you have about 15" Hg of vacuum at idle. It's tolerable down to as little as 12" Hg (don't ask me how I know), but with a true "hot" cam, you'll see idle vacuum below 10" Hg. D-Jet cannot meter such a system properly without many compromises.
