Question Ford starter solenoid wiring

HELP! I used to have one of these on my car, but when I transplanted engines I didn't need it. Now I am having the starting problem again and I can't remember how to wire it up. I tried it a few months ago and ended up frying my points and condenser. I have an auto-X today and I need to get this thing wired up quickly and use it as a temproary fix until I can figure out the root problem. Can anyone tell me how to wire it up?? Thanks in advance, Brian

i can't draw a picture, but take a hot lead from the starters battery lead to a big post on the ford solonoid.

take your existing key wire from the starter to a small lead on the solonoid ( not sure which one , but it might say 'ing' on the solonoid. )

make a wire from the remaining big post to the key wire to the starter.

the solonoid must have the housing grounded well in order to work. if it is a marine solonoid, the second small post must be grounded.

when in doubt, smack it.

Thanks guys, I got her figured out this morning and had a great time at the Auto-X. It never ceases to amaze me that this 100hp car spanks cars with twice the hp. I was only 5 sec behind my buddies ~280hp, suspension done to the hilt, slick shod M3! To think what I could do with slicks! Those are on my shopping list! Brian

I put my engine back in last night but I get nothing from the starter. Can you guys please explain the wiring in this photo. I have a feeling I am making this much harder than it should be but I am lost here.

Ok looking again at the wiring diagram two posts on the starter. Battery and alternatoeon the long post and yellow wire from the relay board to the short post right? So what are all of the other wires in this photo running to?

The solenoid should have four connections. There should be an "input" and an "output" (I'm probably not using the "correct" names, but I hope I can convey the idea). And there should be two "switching" connections.

The "input" should be connected to the same post as the big FAT cable from the battery. It doesn't have to be that thick, but it should be big stout wire at least as thick as the stock yellow starter wire.

The "output" should be connected to the flag terminal on the starter where the yellow starter wire used to go.

Used to? Yeah, you unplug the yellow wire, and connect it to one of the "switching" contacts on the solenoid. You hook the other one of those to ground.

And that's how you wire up a relay--because a solenoid is just a big relay...
