Running a little rich?

I love weber carbs when they work good. When they don't, makes me crazy. While at an event in South Lake Tahoe recently (just over 6000ft elevation) my car as expected ran like poop. I pulled the plugs when I got home and found this. A little out of focus but you get the picture. Both plugs from the left side were black. The right side looked pretty normal. Looks like the left carb gets a good look at. Anyway, I hope it's the carb and not ummm something else. LOL

That's one of the reasons I like fuel injection. It can cope with changing conditions better than carbs. Plus it doesn't usually have issues that affect only one or two cylinders--or at least, not nearly as often as carbs seem to.

I'm not a carb expert, but running some hotter plugs can get you home.

Carbs are tuned differently.
What carb linkage are you using?

You might want to look at the float level or needle/seat on the rich side

I've been using this hex bar linkage for the last 20 years. Before anyone wants to say how bad it is, (someone will LOL) there is absolutely no play in the linkage, the linkage lengths and geometry is exactly the same. Both throttle butterflies open at the same rate and are fully open when the pedal is on the stop. I need to massage the idle mixture screws and re-check the idle jets.

I'd love to have a modern fuel injection for my car but the last one I looked at was about $4000.

Carbs can be finicky, yeah. When they're not running well, some of the common problems:
- Fuel pressure too high. Richard Parr has always been adamant that 3 - 3.5 psi is the right number for IDAs and PMOs. I'd assume the same for IDFs.
- Check float levels and needle valves
- A jet or passage is plugged somewhere

Sometimes a new set of plugs can solve problems. Especially once they get fouled, sometimes they can be hard to bring back. Cheap enough to try.
