				Rust Restoration

Hello all, I plan on doing some major body resotration this winter. I would like some advice on the rust end. I have the dreaded battery rust taking over the car. The entire metal area under the battery is rusted through. I plan on cutting out and replacing with new. I also noticed that there is quite a bit of rusty surface stuff on some of the sheet metal. Is it acceptable to sand the rust away and repaint, rust protect? Or would it be nessicary to cut and remove those pieces too? I can tell that the metal still has it's structual properties, I'm only worried about the rust spreading. I've heard that it is important to get rid of all the rust, or it will just spread back. Any advice? thanks

Having spent last winter doing the same thing, my advice would be if it is just surface rust without major pitting, you can grind down to fresh metal and / or treat with a rust stopper, then refinish. If it is much worse than that, go for surgery. And when you start cutting, cut it ALL out. If you are going to the trouble of welding in a new patch, the time and effort isn't in the welding. It is in the prep and finish work which takes the same amount of time for a small patch as a large one. Good luck | ||
