belt life

Before I start trying to drive this car that's been idle for almost two decades, do I need to change the alternator belt? I found some posts about the car throwing the belt, but do I need a new one for good measure? How much trouble is it to change?

Red face probably should change it.

As with any engine task on a 014, it involves mostly a lot of contorting to get to the right area. If I remember correctly, you just loosen the alternator bolts, slid the alternator upward to allow slack in the belt. Then reach around behind fan shroud to remove/replace. It not easy. but doesn't require training from stuttgart, If it breaks enroute, your alt willl quit charging and battery will drain. It probably is really dry and brittle. I think it has a great chance of breaking.

Given the choice, I'd much rather have the belt break on the 914 than the belts on the 924S. If the belts on the 924S ever break I'm looking at a rebuilt head as a best-case scenario.

Try having the belt go on a 911 motor. Or a Bug motor... It overheats in about 5 minutes.

I guess I'll add it to my 'to do' list. I'm getting better at contortionism the longer I work on this thing.

Bruce, send me the bill for the sleeping pills!

At least you can stop before damage is done. Belt breaks on a 944/924S you can kiss your valves goodbye.

why worry it takes 2 mins to put a belt on doneit twice dont even need tools or get dirty

put car in forth gear ... get out ... chase car and shut off ...open engine lid... put belt on alt. ... start belt on bottom of fan ... roll car backwards ... scream as fingers get caught under belt ... roll car backwards faster to get fingers out ... drive to bar for ice for fingers ... drink beer to numb brain to match fingers

Man... those are some used hands... probably need replacing before they crack and break-off.
