739142.0 when car is hot all power lost

I'm at a loss. I have a 73 2.0 and I have been auto crossing it. The car is ok on my first runs, but as the day progresses it begins to lose power the harder I step on the accelerator. I will try to down shift, thinking the higher RPM revs would help, but there is no power. The harder I push the pedal the less the power. It just continues to search for power until it gives up and there is nothing there. Timing ok, points ok, plugs ok. Intermittently there is a backfire after shifting at redline in 2nd or 3rd. The odd part is that it seems ok when cold. It is nothing I can determine, even when hot just by reving the car out of gear. Also the idle is smooth at 1000, with no surging. I'm lost. Any ideas would be very enjoyable.

Fuel pump losing it when it gets hot???? That thing has to maintain something like 60PSI all the time... thats my guess.

I ran a tee in the high side of the fuel pressure line and then a long flexible line (4 feet) with a pressure gauge on the end up into the cab. Watched the gauge under acceleration and found my fuel pump not getting the right pressure. Should be around 28psi if my memory is correct.

Had my lines crossed at the fuel pump, pump was fine. Switched lines and have been running great since.

How hot is it getting? No engine performs well hot, I have seen engines get so hot that they just die, and wobn't start back till they cool off.

It's not getting super hot just a 60 sec run is all, but most likely hotter than casual driving. Nothing that the engine shouldnt be able to handle. There is severl other running the exact same engine and no problems there.

What are the oil temps? If you have to original guage (without numbers) then remember that guage is basically worthless.

the oil temp on the guage is just a 1/4 inch past the begining.
Someone happen to mention that there is a temp swich on the engine that could cause this. Any way to test this?

my car does this too but im pretty sure its overheating. in 40f weather it will not flatten out ( the needle might go 1/4-3/8 on the useless gauge) but anything over about 70f i will get a flat tourqe curve and hot start after a couple hours of street driving...

i live in southern maryland and never make it to pca meetings.

I have a simular problem with a 73. The pressure sensor is one place to look.another is the head temp sensor and a third is the throttle switch.
