How long should I wait after window installation to do water testing?

I checked the window fitment in the car and have found that both the firewall and the glass are curved toward the back of the car as it should be. The upper edge of the firewall was positioned toward the front of the car in the corners. I used wood and a lead hammer to adjust the upper edge of the firewall in the corner area so that it is flush with the vertical mounting point on the car.

something is going on here Lauran, NO ONE has this much trouble installing a rear glass. SOMETIMES the frame area is warped and the glass does not sit flat against it due to a previous wreck

My third window installation using 3/8 inch butyl and glass primer on the glass failed.
I have water leakage along the bottom edge of the glass. I am going to try it again using 3/8 inch butyl and without any glass primer on the glass. Also no glass primer on the body of the car. Lauran Last edited by RSOHC; 05-12-2024 at 01:16 PM.. |

My fifth try on installing the rear window using 5/16 inch butyl as done on May 12, 2024.
The air temperature was 67 degrees and the butyl temperature was 135 degrees The window glass and frame of the car were washed with hot water and Dawn dish washing soap. The both were rinsed with cold water. Two setting blocks were stacked and glued in placed about 6 inches from each end of the glass. A total off four setting blocks were used. I used my thumbs to press on those areas where further contact with the glass was needed. Duct tape along the bottom of the glass was used to hold the glass in place after it was put in place. I water test the installation tomorrow Lauran |

I used Urethane to install my rear window. My previous install, almost 4 years prior had allowed the glass to come loose and it rattled. The Urethane was more complicated to install; I used one of the electric Urethane guns the windshield shops use and it pushed out more product than I wanted so we had to do some clean-up. But that window is in and it does not leak. If I were to do it again, I would cut just the very tip off the Urethane tube. Good luck.

On May 13, I tested the window with soapy water and compressed air.
There were no leaks. Thanks to all for their suggestions. |

Cairo,
Is the Urethane applied to the glass or the mounting perimeter on the car before the glass is installed? Lauran |
