tailshift shifter help

I am in the process of completing my 914 V8 installation and am new to 914s. I have a 72 with a tailshift. I have all new bushings, that firewall bushing was a B***h! I noticed on the shifter itself, there is a plate on the right side with rods protruding into the shifter housing to keep the lever from turning. This plate is not attached very well and keeps popping out. Is this part supposed to move or should i just weld it on. And no, I'm not getting a sideshifter, well, not yet anyway. Thanks,
Mark

Are you talking about the "stop plate" (reverse lockout plate), Item 13, Figure 5-28, Page 90 of the Haynes manual?

I am not sure, I don't have my haynes book here, its at work, I will check tomorrow. On the shift linkage exploded view, it shows the shifter assembly as one part. Its the plate on the pass side, its shaped like a house ( 5 sides)

next time you have to do the rod bushing micro wave it in some water. it becomes pliable and much easier to work with. this works well for new stock sway bar bushings too.

I believe if that is anything more than the mildest of V8s, you WILL be getting a SIDE shifter, a whole lot sooner than you'd imagine.
